The news about how the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan is heart-wrenching. Other countries including the United States are sending aid, but the difficulties of reaching those in need are insurmountable.

Although nowhere near the damage and loss of human life, this situation brings back memories of Hurricane Katrina. The lack of action on the part of Philippine government is said to be due to their inability to reach victims, their preparedness and missing, possibly dead staff.

Besides, tweets, Facebook updates, how can we help those in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan? Please do not send supplies of any kind. Financial donations are needed. Here is a list of agencies that I have either worked with in the past or trust because of fact-finding research:

  1. World Food Program, United Nations – They are working to coordinate efforts to connect their staff and those in need. “WFP flew in 44 metric tons of high energy biscuits – enough to feed 120,000 people for a day.” Donate via credit card or PayPal
  2. American Red Cross – Working hand in hand with the Philippine Red Cross, aid was on the ground before the Typhoon hit. They are providing supplies and attempting to communicate with staff and citizens. The Red Cross is the known for its family tracing services, which are in service now. Donate directly to the Typhoon cause.
  3. Habitat for Humanity – Known for sweat labor programs to build houses for people in need, Habitat is sending Shelter Repair Kits and Core Houses to the Philippines. Donate to Re-Build Philippines (Super Typhoon Haiyan) #ReBuildPH
  4. Salvation Army – Ton of food and satellite phones are prepared to be shipped. Working with personnel already on the ground is helping to provide a real picture of how to proceed further. Donations are welcome. You can also make a $10 donations by text. One hundred percent of money donated by sending TYPHOON to 80888 or
  5. World Vision – Emergency food, hygiene kits and water have been distributed already.  Make a donation to World Vision.
