Researching Your Health Care Options

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Healthgrades. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Researching your health care options can be a lifesaver, literally and figuratively. How many of you have heard horror stories about physicians who have amputated the wrong limb, or hospitals that have mixed up patients? Scary, but true and something we want to avoid. We want the best health care for ourselves and for our families.

When my daughter needed to see specialists because of her medical problems, I wanted doctors with good backgrounds and who were recommended by patients or other parents. I chose Healthgrades to find these physicians.

Your search is narrowed down by your location. You can widen the distance or change the location. My first priority is to check if there are any sanctions or malpractice claims. I then check if the doctor is board certified in pediatrics in their specialty. I’ve found that some doctors who treat children are not certified in pediatrics, but specialize in it. That is a major difference which we learned the hard way.

You can also research a physician’s education and training and survey results from patients. You’ll learn about the hospital(s) the doctor can admit to and that hospital’s quality. All of the information you need to research your health care options is in one place.

Recently, Healthgrades put out a report, “Lean In” When Making Healthcare Decisions To Get the Best Outcome. Although it focuses on women’s health issues, such as maternal health and gynecological surgery, the report is helpful for everyone. The main lesson is taking charge of your health by finding the best doctor and hospital for you. It also lists the Women’s Care Excellence Awards for hospitals across the US.

We moms need to take care of ourselves to be able to care for our family. Stay up to date on your checkups. When you’re sick, see your doctor. And always research the best health care options for you.

Learn more about how to do that by downloading the free Healthgrades report.
